Now I Know Why We Let the Holocaust Happen

The genocide we are witnessing in Ukraine is just a repetition of History, and we, unmoved, are seeing it all.

Since the war in Ukraine began, I admit that I started to turn off the TV after a short time. Adding to all this, I felt a nervous breakdown. I was not officially diagnosed, but I know I had it, so I wanted to avoid reality, heal myself, and feel it was ok to ignore it.

But finally, I decided to stop ignoring reality, and I turned the television back on. I wish I hadn’t. I wish the television hadn’t shown me the genocide that is happening.

As a teenager studying the Holocaust, I always asked myself:

“How did humanity allow this to happen, how did we allow ourselves to ignore it?”

And now I see the same thing happening in my time, in 2022, and I have the answer: we just care for ourselves.

These so-called leaders talk about sanctions every day, and they go to meetings that come to nothing.

It’s more than time to admit to the world the ugly fact: that the United Nations is beyond obsolete, just as the League of Nations had once become obsolete as well.
