The Role of the Writer — Why Do We Even Exist?
Being a writer.
There is as much good in this profession as there is that is ungrateful. Good because it is terrific to make a living doing something we enjoy.
It’s precious to give wings to the imagination, to wander through words, to take their meanings and give them life. It’s fantastic to be read, to feel that you have a voice and that your opinion is validated by those who read you.
But then there is the other, more irritating side.
And this happens even more in the world of social media, of comments, of attacks so easy to be made behind a screen. And in a world like this, where it seems that everyone can be a writer, a content producer, a blogger, a vlogger, and so on, the role of the writer is even more confused with the opinion of cybernauts whose voice has gone outside the walls of the village cafe onto the global stage.
It has given voice to the fool, the village idiot, and worse, it has given him prominence. Social media did this. They made everyone create a profile as if they were magazine covers. And so, in a place where everyone is relevant, in the end, no one is.
But the really tiresome part is not being understood as a writer, and the writer’s role is confused with that of an economist, teacher, linguist, politician……
